Brazing method

The brazing is defined as followings: the first step was to choose the brazing alloy with the melting point lower than that of joined substrates, and then heated the assembly to make the brazing alloy melt. The joint gap was thus filled with the molten brazing alloy and subsequently the brazed surfaces were wetted by the brazing alloy. At last, the brazed joint was obtained through diffusion between the liquid phases and solid phases. So, the brazing is actually a welding method both with solid phase and liquid phase.

Comparing with welding, the brazing method possesses several advantages: (1) The brazing temperature is usually lower, which can affect the microstructure and mechanical properties of the substrates less. (2) The brazed joint is usually smooth and beautiful. (3) The deformation of the weldment is less, especially for the uniform heating brazing method (furnace brazing). The deformation of weldment can decrease to the minimum, assuring the dimensional accuracy easily. (4) Some brazing methods are allowed to join a few dozen or one hundred brazing seam, achieving high productivity. (5) The brazing method could be used to join dissimilar metal or alloy, especially for joining of metal and nonmetal.

The brazing temperature is usually lower, and with no pressure applied during brazing. Before brazing, some measures should be adopted to clear away any oil, ash and oxide resided on the substrates, making the brazing alloy wet the substrates well and ensure the joint quality. The brazing is divided into two following types according to brazing alloy: (1) Soldering: the liquid temperature of the brazing alloy was below 450℃;(2)Brazing: the liquid temperature of brazing alloy was above 450℃. Moreover, the brazing method with the brazing temperature above 900℃ and no flux used (such as vacuum brazing, furnace brazing) was named as high temperature brazing.

The brazing methods are usually divided based on the heat source. In recent years, lots of new brazing methods occur due to the development of heat source. Many brazing methods were used in production, such as torch brazing, induction brazing, furnace brazing, dip brazing, resistance brazing, vacuum brazing and so on.
